The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA)

Also known as the Buckley Amendment. This act was designed to protect the rights of the student to inspect and review their educational records. Because of this act, students may gain access to their official records at the University.

  1. Students have access to their files.
  2. We do not release a student's file or any information in that file to anyone beside the student unless the student grants written permission. The only exceptions are faculty members, deans, or advisors when contact is in the interest of the student.
  3. Directory information is accessible to anyone unless the student requests otherwise. Directory information consists of:
    • Student's name, address, telephone number
    • Date and place of birth
    • Major field of study
    • Participation in officially recognized sports and activities
    • Weight and height of members of athletic teams
    • Dates of attendance
    • Most recent previous educational institution attended by the student
    • Class
    • Honor rolls may be published, so GPA's may be released to faculty advisors of officially recognized honor societies on campus
    • Release of student information Form (.pdf)
    • For further information read the FERPA description.
