Summer Program for ESOL Students (English for Speakers of Other Languages)

Program Description

Each summer UNH Manchester offers an intensive summer program for intermediate and advanced high school and adult ESOL students. The program meets for five weeks, Monday through Thursday, from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM, and is geared toward people who plan to pursue a post-secondary education.

The 2009 Summer Program for ESOL Students will run from Monday, June 29, through Thursday, July 30.

The program helps prepare college-bound ESOL students for the particular English-language demands of US higher education by offering:

  • Instruction and practice in academic English tasks such as reading college-level texts, taking notes from lectures, and drafting and revising college-level essays;
  • Focused practice in listening comprehension and pronunciation, with grammar review;
  • Field trips to the Millyard Museum, the Currier Museum of Art, and the Canterbury Shaker Village that introduce students not only to local history and culture but also to the specialized vocabularies and larger contexts of various academic disciplines;
  • A first-hand introduction to US college culture through workshops with the offices of Admission and Academic Counseling and a field trip to the Durham campus;
  • Strategies and insights for empowering students to take charge of their own formal education through workshops on time management and maximizing individual learning styles, provided by the Center for Academic Enrichment.

The program ends with a graduation ceremony and a sumptuous international pot-luck feast.

Nearly 300 students from 45 countries have completed the program since it began in 1997. Many have gone on to enroll full-time or part-time at colleges in the University system as well as private colleges in New Hampshire and other states, and we continue to hear of their graduations and accomplishments.

In 2008, the program's twelfth year, participating students came from Russia, Puerto Rico, China, Japan, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Bosnia, Mexico, Ethiopia, and Haiti.
