Summer Programs

Summer 2008 ESOL Summer Program Schedule will be available in the spring of 2008. Please refer to last year's program for general program information

Each summer UNH Manchester offers an intensive five-week summer program for intermediate and advanced ESOL high school students and adults. The program is geared toward people who plan to pursue a post-secondary education.

The Summer Program for ESOL Students at UNH Manchester completed its tenth season in 2006, bringing its total number of participants to more than 250. Students came from Albania, Belize, Bosnia, Colombia, the Republic of Congo, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Haiti, India, Iran, Korea, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, Sierra Leone, Spain, Sudan, Thailand, and Turkey.

Since 1997, nearly 50 students from the Summer Program have enrolled full-time or part-time at UNH Manchester. Others have gone on to other colleges in the UNH system and to private colleges, and we continue to receive word of their graduations and accomplishments.

The program is designed to help prepare college-bound English learners for the particular language demands of US higher education including:

  • Practice performing academic English tasks such as reading college-level texts, taking notes from lectures, and drafting and revising college essays
  • Focused practice in listening comprehension and pronunciation, along with grammar review
  • Field trips to the Millyard Museum, the Currier Museum of Art, and the Canterbury Shaker Village to introduce students not only to local history and culture but also to the specialized vocabularies and larger contexts of various academic disciplines.
  • A first-hand introduction to US college culture through workshops with the offices of Admissions and Academic Counseling and a field trip to the Durham campus.
  • Students gain insights and strategies for taking charge of their own formal education through Center for Academic Enrichment workshops on time management and on maximizing their individual learning styles
  • A graduation ceremony and a sumptuous international pot-luck feast.
