Minors And Special Programs
Beyond the associate and bachelor degree programs offered at UNH Manchester, students have a other options to enhance their academic experience and tailor their University education to meet their career goals and interests.
Minors
UNH Manchester bachelor's degree students may earn a minor in any undergraduate discipline designated by the University. A minor can contrast or complement a student's major program of study. Minors provide an added area of specialized knowledge and experience and enhance an academic portfolio for a career or for graduate or professional education.
Students must consult with their major adviser and also the minor supervisor. A minor typically consists of 20 credits with C- or better and a 2.00 grade-point average in courses that the minor department approves. Courses taken on the pass/fail basis may not be used for a minor. No more than 8 credits used to satisfy major requirements may be used for the minor. Students should declare an intent to earn a minor as early as possible and no later than the end of the junior year. During the final term, an application should be made to the dean to have the minor shown on the academic record.
Cooperative and Special Programs
UNH Manchester provides students with the opportunity to customize their academic program and prepare for their future with teacher education programs, engineering access programs and collaborative agreements with the NH Institute of Art and Mass College of Pharmacy. Students begin their academic program at UNH Manchester and by following a specific program of study, are prepared to transfer to other schools.

Minor Details
Teacher Education
UNHM in cooperation with the Durham campus offers state-approved education programs and is authorized to prepare students for certification in the areas of elementary education and secondary education. Certification under secondary education includes English and social studies. This five-year program is an integrated undergraduate-graduate program culminating in a fifth-year, yearlong internship. Before the internship, students must earn a bachelor's degree outside the field of education. Students who have already earned a bachelor degree outside the field of education are encouraged to apply to the Graduate School.
Undergraduate Teacher Education
For the undergraduate portion of the program, students are advised to select a major related to their desired teaching field (for example, English or history.) Several undergraduate majors, including psychology and humanities, are well suited to those with interests in elementary school teaching. Entering freshmen who are uncertain about a choice of major are encouraged to enroll as undeclared majors. More detailed materials on the teacher education program are available from the Office of Admissions at 603-641-4150 or the Teacher Education Program Coordinator, 603-641-4163.
The procedural steps involved in the five-year program in teacher education are:
- Enroll in Exploring Teaching, EDUC 500. Open to freshmen and above.
- Enroll in teacher education coursework. 700-level courses are open to juniors and above.
- Apply to a master's degree program and to fifth-year internship. Students must apply for the fifth-year internship and master's degree program during the fall of their senior year so that they will have enough time to explore a variety of career and/or graduate study options and conclude their program plans before second semester of that year.
Graduate teacher education
Graduate students participate in a year-long teaching internship in a local elementary or secondary school. The internship is usually done as part of a program leading to either the master of arts in teaching (M.A.T.) or the master of education (M.Ed.) The internship offers 12 graduate credits. If students attend full-time, both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree may be obtained in approximately five years. For more information about the teacher education graduate program, contact the Education Office, 603-641-4163 or the UNH Center for Graduate and Professional Studies at 603-641-4313.
