Placement Test For New Degree Students

The placement test program includes a reading test, an analytic writing test, and a Mathematics test. Students should plan on 2 1/2 hours for the English placement test and 2 1/2 hours for the Math placement test.

All degree students are required to take the English placement test prior to registering for ENG 301, ENG 301A, ENGL 400, ENGL 401, and ENGL 401A. In addition, all degree students must take the Math placement test prior to registering for MATH 301, MATH 302, MATH 418, MATH 420, MATH 424B, MATH 425, ADM 430, PSYC 402, PHIL 412, and CIS 425.

Students may use a calculator on the math placement test UNLESS they are taking the placement test for MATH 424B or MATH 425, in which case calculators are not allowed.

While non-degree students are not required to take the placement tests (see below for Calculus exception), it is strongly recommended that they do. The tests are offered free of charge and are meant to help students make informed choices.

Calculus Exception: MATH 424B - Calculus for Life Sciences

All students, degree and non-degree, wanting to take MATH 424B must have done one of the following:

  1. Passed the MATH 424B placement exam, or
  2. Taken and passed MATH 418, Analysis and Application of Functions, at UNH, or
  3. Taken calculus at the college level prior to registering for MATH 424B at UNH Manchester.

Calculus Exception: MATH 425 - Calculus I

All students, degree and non-degree, wanting to take MATH 425 must have done one of the following:

  1. Passed the MATH 425 placement exam, or
  2. Taken MATH 418 and earned a grade of C or better, or
  3. Taken calculus with trigonometry at the college level prior to registering for MATH 425 at UNH Manchester.

Test Preparation

If you would like to prepare for the tests, you can do so in the following ways:

  • Read as much as you can between now and the day of the English placement test, and practice remembering what you read.
  • Take practice reading tests found in SAT preparation books or CD's.
  • Go on-line to www.free-ed.net or to www.sosmath.com to find practice problems in mathematics. If you are thinking about taking Math 425, you can go to a Sample Test (PDF) to find out what might be your weak areas in algebra and pre-calculus.

Accommodations

Students who require testing accommodations or students for whom English is not the first language are advised to call the UNH Manchester Center for Academic Enrichment at 641-4113 to make arrangements for testing prior to the posted dates and times.
