Warmth from the Millyard Winter Clothing Drive
Manchester, NH – Evidence of toughening economic times is found in the statistics of agencies like New Horizons for New Hampshire in Manchester, which has seen a 15 to 25 percent increase in people seeking services at the food pantry, shelter and kitchen since the summer, according to Mary Silva, executive director of New Horizons. Too many of our fellow residents simply don’t have enough money to buy food, much less “luxury” items such as heavy winter clothing.
To help meet this need, the Community Leadership program at UNH-Manchester is sponsoring Warmth from the Millyard, a winter clothing drive to be held until Nov. 21. The drive will collect clean, usable winter clothing for distribution to area organizations including the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Nashua, New Horizons for New Hampshire, the Nashua Food Kitchen and Shelter, YWCA of Manchester, Child and Family Services of New Hampshire, The Salvation Army, the Greater Manchester Family YMCA, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Manchester and Southern NH Services Head Start program.
Partnering with the students in the Community Leadership program for Warmth from the Millyard are a number of New Hampshire businesses including FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), the Manchester Historic Association/Millyard Museum, SEE Science Center, the NH Department of Transportation, the NH Transportation Management Center, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Derry, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Salem, Santo’s Office Building in Salem and UNHM. These businesses will host collection boxes where their employees and customers can donate clean and useable winter clothing. Morgan Storage has graciously agreed to donate a portable storage container to hold donations during the drive. The drive last year collected more than 800 coats for all ages, children’s snow pants, gloves, sweaters, blankets and hats. Due to this achievement, students in last year’s Community Leadership class won a 2008 Presidents' Award from Campus Compact of NH. Other businesses in the Millyard are invited to participate in the Drive by dropping off warm clothes at UNH Manchester during scheduled times. If your business would like to participate, please contact Associate Professor Kate Hanson, 862-1064, or kate.hanson@unh.edu.
